The Zoar Levee surrounds the Historic Village of Zoar, a National Historic Landmark. DRS addressed potential internal erosion of the dam’s foundation soils by backward erosion piping. This included the installation of an Internal Erosion Interceptor Trench (IEIT) of 2,000LF that is 2FT wide by 25FT deep. Installation of granular seepage berm along the interior toe of the levee. Extension of the existing manholes to the surface of the new berm and extension of the relief well outflow piping laterally through the berm. Vibration monitoring during construction and pre- and post-construction structural assessments of village structures.
The dam safety modification is essential to saving the Village of Zoar. DRS worked closely with USACE, their archeological team, and village residents to ensure a successful project.
